Methods to keep flowers fresh for long time in Vase or Flower Pot

1. When you get or buy flowers keep them in water, use mineral or distilled water to keep flowers fresh for longer time. You can use lukewarm tap water or any sugar-sweetened clear soda into the vase as an alternative to water. As these aerated drinks contain acid in them that prevents the growth of bacteria.

2. You can also put the preservative in the vase water that you took from the florist or you can make your own preservative by mixing a little amount of sugar with lemon juice. Put a copper coin, an aspirin or multivitamin tablet, a pinch of salt or baking powder any one of the above mentioned things into the water in the vase to keep flowers fresh longer.

3. Cut the stem of flowers under the running water or in a basin filled with lukewarm water with the help of sharp knife at a 45-degree angle to avoid crushing the stem. This will increase the surface area of the stem to absorb more water. Also cut the leaves on the lower part of the stems which can submerge under the vase water as these leaves carry dirt and bacteria which would contaminate water.

4. Change the water of vase or flower pot everyday to minimize the growth of bacteria. Re-cut around 2 cm (less than an inch) of the flower stem every few days.

5. You can also use plant freshener on the leaves and the stems of the flowers to slow down the growth of bacteria and increase the life of the flowers.

6. Last but not the least try to put the flowers in a cold corner of your room, never put them on the TV, near cooking range or an hot place as heat can destroy the flowers. If possible than put the flowers in an open area for overnight.

7. Some flowers like daffodils, hyacinths and tulips need cold water, so use cold water in a vase to put these flowers. Keep the daffodils in a separate vase as the stems of daffodils give out certain substances that can be toxic to other flowers.
